George III St Giles Gainsborough Armchair

A carved mahogany Gainsborough Armchair, closely based on the chairs in the celebrated suite of furniture made for the Earls of Shaftesbury, at St. Giles’ House, Dorset, in the middle of the 18th century. This model of chair, with its profuse naturalistic foliate and floral carving, is a testament to the carver's skill, and the original designers fell for the restrained rococo taste in England in the period circa 1755 - 1765.
