How to Clean Your High End Furniture - English Georgian America

One major concern among homeowners is how to clean and protect their high-end furniture.

The truth is there are several methods that are effective and easy. It's just a matter of what suits you best.

Once you've found the ideal cleaning method for you, there's no reason why your high-end furniture can't continue looking like new (yes, even in homes with small children).

Read on to learn more about cleaning and protecting your high-end furniture.

Top Cleaning Techniques for High-End Furniture

White Wine Vinegar and Magic Eraser

If you haven't implemented white wine vinegar into your cleaning arsenal, it's time. Not only is vinegar a natural ingredient (read: no harsh chemicals) but it's also strong enough to take on ultimately any surface. For your high-end furniture, you'll want to combine the white wine vinegar with a good ol' mr.clean magic eraser.

Just use the magic eraser as you would a sponge or washcloth, dip gently in the vinegar and clean away. Keep in mind, for larger pieces you may have to use up to three magic erasers to get the job done.

Not only is vinegar an effective solution but it's also a great replacement for manyhazardous cleaning products you may be using at home.

Black Tea

Ever notice that sticky wax buildup that seems to develop over time on wooden high-end furniture, particularly dark wood? Black Tea may be the secret you're looking for. Just steep three black tea bags in 1 cup of hot water for 10 minutes, then allow the tea to cool (remember, you NEVER want to put anything hot on or near wooden surfaces).

Once the tea has completely cooled use a clean, lint-free cloth to wipe down the furniture and then buff dry. Not only is this technique very efficient, it's also incredibly affordable when compared to commercial wood cleaners. Try using a toothbrush or eyelash brush to gently scrub off buildup in difficult corners and crevices.

Home Made Furniture Polish

Sometimes your high-end furniture deserves a little extra TLC, especially in homes where smokers may be present. Wooden furniture is naturally porous, allowing the smell of smoke to easily get trapped within the grain.

For this reason, you will want a wood cleaner that will disinfect, clean, and remove bad odors. Try the following recipe for a safe and effective furniture polish that is great for removing odors:

  • 1/2 cup of Olive Oil
  • 1/2 cup of White Vinegar
  • 20 drops of lemon essential oil

Combine ingredients in a plastic spray bottle and use as an all-natural alternative to your traditional high-end furniture polish. The lemon oil is the odor-fighting secret ingredient, so feel free to add a little extra if your furniture has really absorbed the smoke smell.

Oil and Vinegar

Typicallyoil and vinegar don't mix. But when it comes to removing scratches on your high-end furniture, these two products are a powerful mix. Simply use 1 part white vinegar to two parts canola oil.

Combine the ingredients and apply the mix to a clean polishing rag. Continue to wipe it over your furniture until the scratches are gone. If you rather spray the mixture on, you can also combine the oil and vinegar in a plastic spray bottle.

Watermark Remover

Okay, so maybe you didn't catch our warning earlier about not putting warm or hot items onto wooden surfaces. It happens. The good news is, it can be fixed.

Try picking up watermark remover made especially for wooden furniture and gently rub the cloth over the area where the heat stain is. The stain should slowly start to disappear after a minute or two.

Can't find a good watermark remover? There are a number of ways toremove rings. Chances are you can get your hands on some mayonnaise.

Yes, we said mayonnaise. As odd as it may sound, mayo may be the perfect solution when a guest forgets to use a coaster.

Simply cover the heat ring with about 2 tablespoons of full-fat mayonnaise, leave it on overnight (or for at least 8 hours) and wipe clean. The fat will absorb excess moisture and leave your furniture good as new.

Coconut Oil

By now you've likely heard about the miracle product that is coconut oil, but did you know that it's also a great tool for refinishing high-end furniture?

If you've owned your piece for some time and want to keep it looking like new, simply put a little coconut oil on a polishing rag and apply to your wooden furniture.

Allow the oil to sit for about 5 minutes and then buff clean. This technique works best when done after cleaning the wood.

Orange Oil and Murphy's Oil Soap

There's something about oil-based products that leave your furniture sparkling.

For this cleaning technique, you will need orange oil, Murphy's oil soap, steel wool and a polishing rag. If the idea of coming near your wooden furniture with steel wool makes you cringe, don't worry.

You'll be using extra fine #0000 grade steel wool and very lightly, only on the areas that have things like paint stuck to it. For the rest of the furniture, simply apply a light amount of the orange oil and Murphy's oil soap to wipe down the furniture. Allow it to set for a few minutes and then buffer clean.

Looking for another household item to help you remove watermarks from your furniture? There may be one hiding in your bathroom.

That's right, simply applying some white toothpaste to the watermarks on wooden furniture can completely remove the ring.

Try a brand like Sensodyne for best results. You don't need to scrub too hard or very long to see a difference. The results should show immediately.
